Personal Background: Ryu grew up a rich kid, but was burdened by expectations and the need to keep a good image. He rebelled against this and became a delinquent, getting into countless fights and other kinds of trouble. Toward the end of his high school life, he mellowed slightly, having become somewhat tired of rebelling. Pressured to find a dignified occupation, he studied medicine and got into a prestigious medical school.

He found the practise of medicine rather boring, until he met a man in his forties who had developed cancer. Ryu was privately impressed by the man's strength, quick wit and fighting spirit despite the seriousness of his illness. However, once the cancer intensified, the other doctors pretty much gave up on him. They knew he wouldn't make it, and when Ryu confronted them about it, they explained there was no point trying to deny what they had no way of preventing. The man needed a donor, but eventually died before anything surfaced for him. Depressed and robbed of respect for the hospital, Ryu transferred to New Skattun...
